About "Akage No An"
"Akage No An" is a Japanese anime produced in 1979. It is based on the book by Lucy Maud Montgomery, "Anne of Green Gables". Although it was produced by Nippon Animation, "Akage No An" was worked on by Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki, who would 6 years later, found Studio Ghibli. Many of the hallmarks that would make Studio Ghibli famous can be seen in this earlier work.
"Akage No An" subtitles
There seems to be two sets of subtitle sources for "Akage No An":
- Portuguese subbing team, Silver Zero Subs.
- .SRT set of subtitles from an unknown source that was originally hosted on Allsubs, however this site no longer exists. The origin of these subs is uncertain. It is possible that they are from the Japanese Blu Ray release of this series.
Details of this project
This project aims to add an additional layer of editing to some of the grammatical, spelling and translation of Silver Zero Subs' work.
There are some strange turns of phrase in the original text by Lucy Maud Montgomery which are no longer in common use, but these have been purposefully left in.
Process:
- Extract the subtitle files from Silver Zero Subs videos
- Update the fonts and styles so they are legible against light backgrounds
- Colour code speech for each main character
- Edit English spelling and grammar
- Re-time lines so they fall under 20 characters per second
- Translate opening titles and credits
- Edit the existing translation of the opening song
- Translate occaisional mid-episode songs
How to use the sub files
- Get hold of the cartoons. There is a Japanese BR boxset. There may be other sources.
- Get hold of a media player that allows you to load subtitle files e.g. VideoLAN VLC Media Player
- Download the subtitle files from this site.
- Load up the video in the media player, then load in the subtitles and select them.
! If you are using a Windows based PC you can place the subtitles files in a folder called "Subs" inside the folder you have the cartoons in, then when you load the individual video file up in VLC then the subtitles will automatically play. There may be ways to do this on Apple and Linux boxes.
