Training

This section explains the different ways you can develop your skills and understanding, ranging from simple things you can do on-line now, to in-depth training provision.

On-line Assessment:
Try a simple test of how much you know and identify what you might want to learn more about:

Training courses:

A review of existing training providers on the subject of analytical and delivery capability. This should help you find a course based on a lot of major the subjects in this Places Handbook.  Most of the courses are for anyone.

Government Office Familiarisation Sessions:

Open to Government Office staff only, this one day face-to-face training course will will be a useful way to get a better understanding of how to use the handbook and how to use the tools and techniques in practice.  You will be encouraged to do a Practical Exercise to really cement what you’ve learnt.

Government Office Delivery Champions Course:

Open to Government Office staff only. If you are really interested in this stuff and have good experience of supporting delivery in practice or have strong analytical skills you may want to put yourself forward for the Delivery Champions Course. This is an intensive course, working through the detail of the key delivery tools and techniques and looking at how other organisations such as PMDU use them.  This is a very practical course with site visits and the requirement to follow up the event with an in-depth Practical Exercise.  After completing the course and the Practical Exercise you will be added to the pool of GO Delivery Champions to support other colleagues. Equally, if you are looking to broaden your experience and are interested, the CLG new Local Analysis and Performance Unit (LAPU) will be offering the delivery champions opportunities to work with them on their in depth research projects on key delivery problems - reporting into the LRG Cabinet Committee (i.e. ministers).  If you're thinking that this is just not the right time, the training will start after the LAA refresh so should fit nicely with LAA workload.

A bit more about the Practical Exercises......

After attending either the Familiarisation Session or the Delivery Champions course you will be expected to try out what you’ve learnt in a real work situation.  The outcome will be a written account (very short for the familiarisation session, longer for the champions) of how you used the tools and techniques from the training to address a delivery challenge.  To ensure the Practical Exercise is more than just a paper exercise, you will be able to submit your written account to an expert who will give you feedback on your method and offer tips and guidance for improvement.  This is not a ‘marking’ exercise and will not be recorded or sent to anyone apart from you.  You may be thinking - isn't this all just extra work for me?  Well, not really as the aim is that your Practical Exercise would focus on something you were doing anyway, but you could then adapt it using some helpful tools, techniques and templates from the Places Handbook to further develop your work.

Any completed Practical Exercises should be sent to [places.handbook@rcu.gsi.gov.uk - Dead Link].
